A long tradition of outdoor pursuits.


Outdoor pursuits has always been an integral part of life at Giggleswick School. Ambitious young people have been inspired to scour the hillsides for adventure and climb the local cliff faces and crags for the thrill of the challenge.  


With a large number of caves surrounding the school, caving has always been a popular activity. Potholing on Sundays was one of the first mountaineering activities at the school and the school cave rescue team can be traced back to earlier than 1967. The school cave rescue team continued until 1990 when the combination of fewer accidents, ease of access to caves by helicopter and car, and the ever tightening health and safety provisions preventing under 18’s from assisting rescues caused the club to close. 


Our Lead Instructors

Chris Wright

Head of Outdoor Pursuits
Chris is an experienced mountaineer and expedition leader, a winter mountain leader, rock climbing instructor and an aspirant mountaineering instructor. He has led numerous personal and youth expeditions, across six continents, for almost 30 years. He is also a keen alpinist and mountain ultra runner, and completed the UTMB 2018.  
A Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society since 1993, ex Para and teacher with a string of qualifications to his name, Chris has a depth and breadth of outdoor knowledge and practical experiences and has worked with people of all ages and varying abilities, creating a safe trusting environment to develop skills.

Pete Goldsmith

Pete holds the Mountaineering Instructors Certificate (MIC) and the International Mountain Leader Award (IML). He has been climbing and mountaineering at home and abroad for 30 years and for the last twenty, has been directing Hill and Mountain Leader (HML), Lowland Leader (LLA) and Rock Climber Instructor (RCI) training and assessment courses. 
Pete is also a qualified teacher and has been Head of Outdoor Pursuits and Educational Visits Coordinator (EVC) at a large comprehensive school. He is an expert at organising school visits, managing risk and facilitating activities in the outdoors. 
Pete also has a deep understanding of and interest in mountaineering history and the outdoor environment.

John Kettle

John Kettle is a climbing and mountain biking coach, living in the Lake District and working throughout the UK. He holds the highest UK-specific mountaineering qualification, the MIC, and he is a provider of the Mountain Training Coaching Awards.
He graduated from Sheffield with a Design degree, and realised that he didn’t want to work at a desk. He took a trainee instructor post in Sussex, then moved to the mountains in North Wales, then the Lake District and on to the Highlands to ice climb and instruct for 13 consecutive winters. After two summers at Plas y Brenin he began coaching independently, rock climbing and mountain biking, and has spent the last 8 years specialising in coaching skills to climbers and bikers. 

Howard Betts

Howard has over 30-years’ experience in the field of Organisational Development during which time he has made extensive use of experiential learning in particular through use of the powerful medium of the outdoor environment. 
As an independent consultant Howard has worked closely with many leading national and global businesses as well as with not-for profit organisations on programmes for team working, leadership, organisational and personal change and executive coaching. 
In addition to his independent work, he was a part-time contributor to the University of Exeter MBA programme for some 14 years and was a co-creator of the Leadership Studies Programme at the University of Exeter. Along with two other colleagues, he was a co-founder the Centre for Leadership Studies where he contributed to the Diploma and Masters programmes for 10 years where he was appointed a Fellow. 
With a long background in sport as a participant he also became involved in sports coaching and sports psychology spanning some 40 years applying the learning and experience from this to his commercial work. He has a BSc in Economics and Finance and an MSc in Psychology.
